Why you should live in Houston

Posted OnFeb 09, 2016

Houston is the fourth largest city in the states, but is quickly catching up to Chicago, the third largest, thanks to its tremendous growth. Why is everyone moving to “H town”? Here are a couple of reasons I’ve found while working with local real estate.

Economic Strength

Even during the 2008 recession, the economy in southeast Texas has remained steady, if not strong. Houston in particular  has the biggest economy in the state, and has the second most Fortune 500 companies of any city in the country. In 2013 alone, Houston ranked fourth in  GDP with an economic output of $463 — enough to equal that of Poland and Taiwan. Not to mention that Houston’s growth was three times greater than LA and twice as great as Chicago from 2009 to 2012.

Job Opportunities

All that growth means opportunities abound in  H town. The city’s employment is at an all-time high, with 354,000 more jobs available since the recession — adding three jobs for each lost during the recession (more than every other city in the states).

Work Diversity

Sure, Houston’s star industry is the energy industry, but we offer plenty of other jobs with the continued regional growth. Manufacturing, engineering, and finance are all industries in which Houston also ranks highly, acting as number one for trade-related jobs and blue-collar jobs. Even health care is prominent here, the home for the Texas Medical Center (the largest worldwide).

Real Estate

Our low housing prices have lead to lower costs of living and our higher paying jobs make money easier to save. Rent is also cheaper than other high population cities, making moving to Houston ideal.

All the Amenities

The restaurants, museums, shops, theaters, and other entertainment spaces make Houston one of the coolest cities to live in, not to mention one of the most green with more parks and green space than any other US metro area. H town is also considered the most diverse city in the nation, according to the US Census. You can’t find a more promising place to live than here at the heart of the Lone Star state.
